Biography

Dr. Neil Skolnik, M.D. is an academic family physician who teaches residents and medical students as well as sees patients at Abington Family Medicine. He is a Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, and Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Abington Memorial Hospital. He graduated from Emory University School of Medicine and did his residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has written and edited five books – On The Ledge: A Doctors Stories from the Inner City; Essential Practice Guidelines for Primary Care; Essential Infectious Disease Topics for Primary Care; Sexually Transmitted Diseases for Primary Care (in press) and Electronic Medical Records: A Practical Guide for Primary Care , which a JAMA review (May, 2011) stated did, “an excellent job of covering the transition from a paper-based to a computer-based charting system.”. He has published approximately two hundred columns, articles, and essays on a diverse range of subjects including laboratory diagnosis, disease management, guideline-based medical care, handheld technology in medicine and electronic health records, and medical humanities. He has given over two hundred lectures to large and small audiences, as well as lectured and discussed medical topics through media on-line and in podcasts covering a wide variety of medical, cultural, and literary topics. He currently coordinates educational podcasts for the American Diabetes Association, the Infectious Disease Society of America, and Family Practice and Internal Medicine News. He has also worked with large organizations including the CDC, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the American Diabetes Association, the American Thoracic Society, and the American Academy of Family Physicians developing software applications for handheld devices including iPhones to assist physicians in point-of-care decision making.
