An inhibitory interneuron releases GABA onto a receptor on the presynaptic neuron, which also contains a Sigma-1 receptor and vesicles of glutamate. The presynaptic terminal releases glutamate into the synapse, where it acts on postsynaptic NMDA and AMPA receptors, labeled as ionotropic (rapid-acting) glutamate receptors.
