DEA MATE Act FAQs

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act (Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023) requires new or renewing DEA registrants, as of Tuesday, June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least eight hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders. The DEA substance use disorder and opioid training requirements can be found here: MATE_Training_Letter_Final.pdf (usdoj.gov)

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has shared recommendations for curricular elements in substance use disorder training.

All DEA-registered practitioners, with the exception of practitioners that are solely veterinarians.

Beginning on June 27, 2023, practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form—regardless of whether a registrant is completing their initial registration application or renewing their registration—affirming that they have completed the new DEA opioid and substance use disorder training requirement.

The free MATE Act CME/CE courses listed above include “training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.” This page will be refreshed as new courses become available. Pri-Med is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), and therefore approved to provide training that meets this requirement.

Past trainings on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders can count towards a practitioner meeting this DEA CME requirement.

Your personal Credit Tracker displays all past CME/CE courses you have completed. This can be viewed by logging into Pri-Med.com, and accessing your Dashboard. Your personal Credit Tracker is the first tab. Pri-Med does not need to approve CME/CE courses as satisfying this requirement.
